Story or gameplay? Shocking reveal

  • Ducky

Sometimes it’s important to know which is more valuable for your game – story or the gameplay? What will be the selling point? Good story or a solid gameplay? Usually game design books tell you that gameplay is important and story too, but whatever you do, think about it yourself. Today we tap into this question and on the most basic examples we’ll decide what is more important for you. And since it’s not a subject to much debate, there is also a bonus about the shocking value of your game This Episode became possible thanks to beautiful patron: Heather Welch Tomas Høgemark Nathan Neumeister Have fun, have a good time, come around to say hi. What is the point of that all?

  • Ducky

We have discussed, what tricks you could use to make your players interested in the game and make them play it more, but tonight we look at the other side if that coin – what to avoid to make players not want to touch anything gaming related anymore. And we are doing it because Quake made me want to stop playing anything entirely for some time. Yes, that one classic Quake, that is usually praised for being the breakthrough of the shooters. But hey, let’s see, how it goes, shall we? This Episode became possible thanks to beautiful patron: Heather Welch Tomas Høgemark Nathan Neumeister Have fun, have a good time, come around to say hi. Who are you people?!

  • Ducky

When you wake up in the dank cave remembering nothing it is a very bad sign. Or it is one of those adventure game starting points and you might end up being a prince of some sort. Though amnesia of the protagonist is always considered an overused trait in gaming, there was never a shortage of developers to try and add something new and exciting to this formula. Let’s see, how and why do they make it? This Episode became possible thanks to beautiful patron: Heather Welch Tomas Høgemark Nathan Neumeister Have fun, have a good time, come around to say hi. Hunting dinosaurs with lasers

  • Ducky

Some games have distinct traits, some platforms you like to play on have distinct traits, like consoles in their early days loved to make you run in circles collecting the stuff the developers hid from you. People loved the concept so much they tried to implement it to every genre possible and, by some weird coincidence, the classic console shooter was born – Turok The Dinosaur Hunter. Game was troubled with various design choices mixed in together but is still fondly remembered. Let’s dissect it now. Manipulations and Fairy tales

  • Ducky

Some episodes just write themselves. That’s how close the themes I quack about are to me. And sometimes the theme is just wrong. And I can’t have enough expertise in it to make it work. What should I do? Switch to a whole different episode and make a better theme, by praising yet another little game, that is based on the premise of your regular fairy tale. And there you have it – the episode, that explains itself. This Episode became possible thanks to beautiful patron: Heather Welch Have fun, have a good time, come around to say hi. In Imperial Skyrim challenge has to overcome you

  • Ducky

Do you really think, that the story and the characters are the only things that make a good game good? Of course you thought, that there is more to that. And today I will argue, that it’s a challenge. And I took Skyrim as the game, that pretends to have one, but fails to deliver. There are many more games that has no challenges for the players whatsoever as well as there are game, who did it right, but the Skyrim is popular and I didn’t feel like talking about something obscure tonight. Talk to your players in every way possible.

  • Ducky

How often did you play Morrowind and thought to yourself: “wow! this game is perfect! I would never change anything in it!” Probably it was not very often for the game sometimes having a bad glitch or a weird design flaw. Though it’s legendary for being the best Bethesda could ever produce, it’s not without flaws. And in this episode we’re about to quack with ourselves about the imperfections of the great game and the feedback provided to players. Tell your story with fists

  • Ducky

Sometimes you tell your story with carefully structured narrative, events and with interactions between protagonist and NPC. Sometimes – with audiologs and emails. But hat if you start to tell the story with enemies, difficulty, consumables and loot? Is it even possible? Sure thing! Hop it to this episode to know how.
